Step 1: Get the Right Size – Measure, Don’t Guess!
The biggest mistake pet owners make is choosing a diaper based only on their dog’s weight. While weight is a good starting point, the waist measurement is far more accurate for getting a good fit.
Here’s how to measure your dog correctly:
- Take a soft measuring tape and wrap it around the slimmest part of your dog’s waist, right in front of their hind legs.
- Make sure the tape is snug, but not tight—you should be able to fit one finger between the tape and your dog’s skin to ensure comfort.
- For female dogs, you should also check the distance from the tail hole to the waist, to make sure the diaper covers all the right areas.
Most brands, including AidingCare, have a detailed sizing chart to help you match your measurements:
- XS: For dogs 2-5 lbs, waist 10-13 inches
- S: For dogs 5-15 lbs, waist 13-18 inches
- M: For dogs 15-30 lbs, waist 18-23 inches
- L: For dogs 30-50 lbs, waist 23-28 inches
- XL: For dogs 50-70 lbs, waist 28-33 inches
If your dog is between sizes, always size up. It’s much easier to adjust a slightly larger diaper than to force your pup into one that’s too tight and restrictive.
Step 2: Choose the Right Materials
Not all washable dog diapers are made the same. The materials will determine how comfortable, absorbent, and durable the diaper is. Look for these key features:
- Soft, Breathable Inner Layer: The layer that touches your dog’s skin should be soft, non-irritating, and breathable. Cotton or microfiber blends work best, as they prevent rashes and keep your pup cool.
- Highly Absorbent Middle Layer: A good diaper needs to lock in moisture to prevent leaks. Look for diapers with multiple layers of absorbent fabric, or even a sewn-in pad that can handle heavy flow.
- Waterproof Outer Layer: The outside of the diaper should be made of a waterproof, but still breathable, material like TPU. This stops urine from seeping through onto your furniture or floors, without making the diaper too hot.
- Adjustable Closures: Velcro (hook-and-loop) closures are the best option, because they let you adjust the fit perfectly, even if your dog gains or loses weight. Avoid diapers with fixed snaps, as they don’t offer the same flexibility.
Step 3: Match the Diaper to Your Dog’s Needs
Different dogs have different needs, so make sure the diaper you choose fits your specific situation:
- For active dogs: Look for diapers with elastic leg openings, to prevent them from slipping off during play.
- For senior dogs with heavy incontinence: Choose a diaper with extra absorbency, or one that has a pocket for adding an extra absorbent insert.
- For female dogs in heat: Make sure the diaper has a properly sized tail hole, to keep your dog comfortable and prevent messes.
